The Environmental protection Agency (EPA) works to ensure safe, clean, and sustainable water for public health and environmental protection.
Municipal water treatment in the U.S. has been regulated by the EPA's Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA). The SDWA sets standards for over 90 common water contaminants, effectively removing pathogens, heavy metals, and other harmful substances, some issues remain:
- Aging Infrastructure: Older pipes can introduce contaminants like lead or sediment into the water supply.
- Disinfection Byproducts: Chlorine and chloramines used for disinfection can react with organic matter to form byproducts like trihalomethanes, which may pose health risks over time.
